Teaching: Wherever Possible, Authentic--real life--Dialogue Works (best!) to Learn:
Well, I was very happy to see the following dialogic exchange over poetry as it took shape over the last several days:

And here is some of the essence of dialogue that is *learning that takes place in the moment, interactively*, specifically, via online community, furthermore, via poetry blogging as exploratory dialogue of poetry and much more:

who is responding to UTA poetry student, James Ola, who had written (scroll upward on the screen this opens upon) :

Did you mean [in the poem *t b cuprite with rest ringers*] by [the phrase,] 'across the tracks from the misdirection' that the misdirection is this terrible pull that society has on the common man, or maybe that it was the strain of conformity[?]"--[question put by James Ola]
It is wonderful to see this exchange occuring between poet and reader/student of poetry. In all the writing and literature courses that I have had, in eleven years now of my having the privilege of teaching (I strongly wish to say, rather, that it's a form of *guiding*), my approach (commonly known in this profession as *teaching philosophy*--something of a misnomer) is centered on, focused to, and privileges forms of dialogue.
That is, in exploring its various modes and effects, via one-on-one encounters in many forms: reading is (*responsible*) act of responding to textuality; writing is a process of active participation within a discourse community, and writing emphasizes creating a subjectivity of flex and flux, of stretching, reaching out and in, way beyond comfort zones of what is considered *the known* both by the writer and by the cultural moment in general.
That's fairly influenced by modernist and post-modernist fluxion, and not a new pedagogy by any means. But reliance on dialogue is a pedagogical path that until its recent revival in American education had been displaced and undervalued in favor of the more streamlining and easier to manage authoritative modes such as lecturing, testing, and other quantitative means of conveying (what?!!!)--well, that is the point, no? The more quantitative-reliant (think *commodified*) a pedagogy becomes, the less chance of a varied, quality-formed, kind of human outcome.
So, then--to discuss pedagogy (for those who might be interested): from readings in signal theorists of literary/social life and its teaching (such as Mikhael Bakhtin, Michele Foucault, Paulo Freire, Judith Butler, Susan Griffin, Wayne Booth, Cheryl Glenn, Edward Said, Jane Tompkins, and Mary Louise Pratt, as well as a few others and followers, who were analyzing in their own differing ways the severely lacking, authoritative literary-philosophical complex of pedagogies of our time--say, the last 50 years or so--which are severely lacking in understanding, empathy, and grace, largely due to western-historical-rhetorical and socio-economic drives toward hierarchizing, therefore toward exclusive, rather than inclusive, ways of knowing and being, thus: the cultivation of an un-self-aware mimesis of such in teaching practices [eg., the fascistic pedagogy of: it's great for us to teach Marx's call to the underclasses and the enslaved, or Adorno's decrying of the abuses of the privileged aesthetics of the current evolutions of modernism, but in the everyday classroom you, as student, will learn these things via extremely confining cognitive and material situations of quantitative testing, whether or not you have something to say to or about the text], even as the state of western knowledge was growing in prominence and provenance, for many matters of advanced learning in terms of that which has gone beyond elemental basics of literacy in a given language/cultural environment: this is definitely the moment when we NEED Gertrude Stein to say, Nononononononononononono, sir: the pigeons are here, in the grass: get it?), I learned something that should have been apparent, something kind of simple and essential: dialogue works far better than telling someone to learn, or to do or to repeat or to know a given thing (damn: I do love the art and texture of the long sentence, too).
I also figured out something else: I learn along with everyone else, and that is one of the most gratifying parts of teaching. That requires a quality of humility in the psyche, a quality that teachers in western culture are not usually known for, though teaching (if real learning is the goal) will work better if the teacher is willing and open to being as much a student as the students in a given topic. It is hard to put this in English--that epitome of imperializing languages--without tripping over the terms of domination: subject(ivity), object (of knowledge), student (sycophant), teacher (master)--incredibly regrettable terms of reference for a very important relational dynamic. I cannot cure western culture, I humbly realize. But what I can do is proceed as a humble being in all my one-on-one and group dynamics, as much as possible, in order that *dialogue* is fostered and sustained.
So there is this fantastic sense of wonder involved with being in the state of humility, which is a state of openness, of vulnerability and risk taking. That is when one is alert, and thus, primed to learn something for life.
I emphasize: I'm sending out many thanks to you, kari, for taking time from your busy workday and writing right now, just to respond in dialogue to an inquisitive & creative reader/student, James Ola, who has tried on poetry and poetic-dialogue for size, and likes it.
